Introduction to "Under the Banner of Heaven"

"Under the Banner of Heaven" is a captivating non-fiction book written by Jon Krakauer. It delves deep into the history, beliefs, and practices of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and its offshoots, specifically focusing on the violent and tragic events that can be linked to religious extremism within these groups. The book combines historical research, personal accounts, and in-depth analysis to present a comprehensive view of the complex relationship between religion, culture, and violence.

2

The Origins of Mormonism

The story begins with the origins of Mormonism. In the early 19th century, Joseph Smith claimed to have received divine revelations. He founded the LDS Church in 1830. Smith said that an angel named Moroni showed him golden plates, which he translated into the Book of Mormon. This new religious movement attracted many followers, but it also faced a lot of opposition. The early Mormons were forced to move several times due to persecution. They finally settled in Utah, where they could practice their religion more freely. The LDS Church had some unique beliefs, such as polygamy. Polygamy was seen as a way to achieve a higher level of spiritual exaltation. This practice was controversial, both within and outside the church. It led to conflicts with the US government, which eventually forced the LDS Church to abandon polygamy in 1890. However, some fundamentalist groups continued to practice it, believing that they were following the true teachings of the early church.

The Fundamentalist Mormon Communities

After the LDS Church gave up polygamy, fundamentalist Mormon communities emerged. These groups, like the FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints), believed that the LDS Church had strayed from the original teachings. They continued to practice polygamy and other traditional Mormon beliefs. In these fundamentalist communities, life was very different from mainstream society. Women were often expected to have many children and to be submissive to their husbands. Men held positions of power and authority. The communities were often isolated, with their own schools, businesses, and social structures. This isolation sometimes led to abuse, both physical and emotional. Children in these communities were often taught to follow the strict religious rules and to shun the outside world.

The Lafferty Murders

One of the central events in the book is the Lafferty murders. In 1984, Ron and Dan Lafferty, members of a fundamentalist Mormon group, brutally killed Brenda Lafferty and her baby daughter, Erica. The Laffertys believed that they were acting on a divine command. They thought that Brenda was an "evil" woman who needed to be removed. The murders shocked the nation. The Laffertys' actions were seen as an extreme example of the dangers of religious extremism. The trial of the Laffertys was a long and complex process. The defense argued that the Laffertys were acting under the influence of their religious beliefs. The prosecution, on the other hand, focused on the brutality of the crimes. Eventually, both Ron and Dan Lafferty were convicted and sentenced to prison.

The Impact of the Lafferty Murders

The Lafferty murders had a significant impact on the perception of fundamentalist Mormon communities. It brought to light the potential for violence within these groups. The media coverage of the case led to increased scrutiny of the fundamentalist Mormon way of life. Many people began to question the role of religion in these communities. Some argued that the strict religious beliefs and practices could lead to a distorted view of reality, which in turn could lead to violence. Others pointed out that the isolation of these communities made it difficult for members to question the teachings and practices. The case also had an impact on the LDS Church. The LDS Church distanced itself from the fundamentalist groups, emphasizing that the actions of the Laffertys were not representative of the mainstream Mormon faith. However, the case still raised questions about the relationship between the LDS Church and its fundamentalist offshoots.
